ULTIMATE CORE and Fitness Pilates really DOES WORK!!! by Natalie Reeve…

A fantastically inspirational story from Natalie who has been a true regular to both my Fitness Pilates (on Monday Nights) and ULTIMATE CORE (on Thursday Nights) in Buckden since 2008 and sent me this fabulous message with photo’s to inspire and motivate YOU if you think that Pilates doesn’t change body shapes – well it does – and here is the proof…

Hi Mel,

I was looking through some old holiday photos & thought it’d be interesting to compare my tummy now with how I looked 4 years ago, before I started coming to Pilates classes!

The first photo was taken on holiday in Australia in January 2008.  In October 2008 I started doing the Monday night Fitness Pilates classes and noticed a difference in my waistline in just 6 weeks, then I started the Thursday night Ultimate Core Pilates in January 2011.  I try to get to a class once a week to keep "zipped up" but it’s incredible what a difference it’s made to my posture and tummy – see second photo, taken in a chilly February 2012.

Anyway, I thought these might be inspiring "before and after" photos for people thinking about taking up the classes (no giggling at the 2008 one though!).
Looks like some kind of weight loss commercial, but I swear I’ve not changed my diet!

See you Monday night!

Be Slimmer and Healthier by Spring-time, by Mel…

316623_10150454887345864_745705863_10547499_38665859_nImagine that Spring is here. The weather is warming up and it’s time to put on your spring clothes and they feel a little tighter than you remember. No, the clothes-shrinking fairy didn’t sabotage your wardrobe over the winter. You remember now: the festive indulgence, the workouts you missed due to the cold, and the extra alcohol you drank. And when was the last time you actually noticed your body shape underneath all those bulky winter jumpers and track suit bottoms?

Clothes-shrinking fairies may not be real, but winter weight gain certainly is. Between the colder weather, shortened daylight hours, and seemingly endless indulgent holidays (from Christmas to Easter), there’s no question that winter creates a perfect storm for weight gain. Even the most motivated people become side-tracked during the colder months. But don’t let the odds get you down! A little motivation and willpower can get you through this rough patch of the year without derailing your healthy lifestyle efforts. Here are some tips to help you overcome the most common winter hurdles.

Make Fitness a Priority. Although frequent physical activity should be a year-round goal, try even harder to put exercise at the top of your to-do list during the winter – even if it snows!!! Not only will it keep the pounds from creeping on, but it will also get your brain circulating feel-good endorphins to prevent seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the months of cold weather and sparse sunlight. (And let’s face it, feeling down or depressed isn’t going to do anything to help you motivation to eat well or exercise.) You can also seize this opportunity to switch up your workouts and enjoy the winter sports (think skiing and ice skating) that aren’t available during the rest of the year. As a bonus, many wintertime activities tend to be group-oriented and family-friendly, so participating in them is a great way to bond with friends and loved ones while keeping fit.

Don’t Let Comfort Food Make You Uncomfortable in Your Clothes. Chomping down on some good old-fashioned comfort food passes the time, warms your body, and makes the dreary winter months more tolerable. Although comfort foods may be good for the soul, few are as friendly to your waistline. Instead of turning to food to lose the winter blues, stop and think about what’s getting you down in the first place. Are you feeling cold? Warm up with a hot cup of tea (it’s calorie-free!) or cuddle up under a big, fluffy blanket. Is the weather making you sad? Call up a friend and do something active together to get you out of the house and keep your blood pumping. Identifying the reasons why you want to eat will make it easier to take a step back and make healthier choices.

Don’t Let the Flu Sabotage Your Fitness. . Winter is prime cold and flu season since you tend to spend more time indoors, creating a breeding ground for germs. The stress of the festive season and getting back to work can also wear down your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness. When you get ill, you might tend to eat more of your favourite high-calorie comfort foods while skipping out on regular exercise, creating a winning combination for weight gain. There are ways to reduce your chances of it happening and you can keep your immune system and metabolism revved to ward off illness by getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Go outside and get some fresh air whenever possible as staying inside too long, especially with other people, is a recipe for multiplying germs.

KettleBells for the GIRLS… and the BOYS too!

Huntingdonshire-20120123-00513_thumb_thumbIf you are looking to change your body shape, get fit, strong, flexible and enjoy a healthier and happier lifestyle this year then ere are some facts about why should bring a mix of KettleBell-style exercises into your life and why they should be your NUMBER ONE choice for fat loss, no matter who you are or how fit or unfit you are:

1. You burn more fat in less time…

Kettlebell training is different from conventional weight training because it focuses on the body’s natural movements; these natural movements leave no muscles untouched. So rather than exercising just your arms, legs, or back, kettlebell training works the entire body as a complete unit.

2. Increases your metabolism….

Your body has evolved to function in certain movement patterns whether it’s bending over to pick up a child or squatting down to sit into a chair. It is these exact movement patterns that Kettlebell training mimics and as you replicate these patterns your body will reward you by getting stronger and building muscle tone fast. I have never seen such quick gains in muscle tone than through KettleBell movements. Muscle tone is very important when it comes to fat loss because muscle is very metabolically active which means it constantly needs energy to maintain its size. The great news is that its favourite source of energy is body fat, so the more muscle tone you can develop the more fat you will burn, even at rest.

3. Burn calories even after exercise…

The "Afterburn" or EPOC (excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption) is another great reason why KettleBells are so effective for fat loss. Certain intensive exercise, like KettleBell Training, that drives your body into the anaerobic zone which creates "Afterburn" or EPOC. Following a KettleBell session the body has to work hard to return itself back to equilibrium: re-oxygenation of tissues, clearance of lactic acid, glycogen refuelling etc. This process demands energy and this energy comes from, you guessed it, your fat stores. So unlike other forms of exercise you will actually be burning calories after your workout, and for up to 24 hours too.

In my experience as a fitness instructor for over 20 years I am extremely impressed with the effectiveness and results you get from swinging bells or heavy weights, especially for fat loss, inch , weight loss and body shape changing in a very short space of time. They are for women, men and even the kids too… Come and join my *NEW* KettleBell, Cardio and Core Sessions at the Buckden Millennium Centre on Monday Nights, 7.20pm – Pay As You Go only £6 per session or £5 concessions.

Mel North Face Resolve Jacket Product Review for Go Outdoors....

Mel North Face Resolve Jacket Product Review for Go Outdoors....I was asked to do product reviews for Go Outdoors of which I gladly accepted and was really excited when I received my first product – this fabulous Octopus Blue North Face Resolve Jacket !  It was sent to me over two weeks ago and since then we have been enjoying an Indian Summer and not a sniff of rain or cold weather to be seen until NOW that is.

This morning it was a lot colder and drizzly as I took Millie out on her usual early morning walk so I took the opportunity to test out the jacket for the first time.  It is quite a lightweight jacket, breathable with HyVentDT waterproofing (DT meaning the inside is Dry to the Touch) and provides a perfect barrier again wind and rain. Because it was a bit colder I layered underneath it with my own North Face micro fleece which definitely made it feel much warmer, and I liked the look and the feel of the brushed collar and it has a center-front zip and Velcro® closure – this the perfect jacket for this time of year whatever your activity and whatever the weather it brings.

The jacket is quite fitted although it mentions it is a standard fit however it is a fabulous fit for me (Size 8/XS) although I do like my jackets a bit longer and this sits just below my waist and the arm length is good for me too.  It had plenty of range of movement without any restrictions as I picked up my walking pace and as the rain started to get heavier the hood is a great size and you can adjust at the sides to fit your head better and it has a stiff peak at the front and then it stows back in the collar.

The North Face Resolve has a lightweight mesh lining to keep you from feeling clammy and wet and allowing total ventilation in any downpour and the only downside for me are the 2 front pockets which are a little on the small side and could just about stow my Blackberry but big enough for a few tissues, dog treats or lip gloss!

Mel North Face Resolve Jacket Product Review for Go Outdoors....Mel North Face Resolve Jacket Product Review for Go Outdoors....Weather: 8 degrees, breezy but dry.

Another early morning blast around the park with Millie, no rain but a colder wind than yesterday and the jacket acted as a perfect wind barrier.  It feels nice to wear, even with a thicker fleece underneath,  looks good and I really like the colour and got a few compliments from other dog walkers.  Watch out for more later…  Going out on a longer walk in the woods maybe…!

Afternoon Autumnal WoodLand Walk.

Weather: 12 degrees, Drizzly and cold.

Despite not feeling very well I thought a short woodland walk would perk me up so I took myself and Millie out into the woods with the North Face Resolve to test out it’s waterproofness as it was very drizzly and quite cold.  Although once in the woods it wasn’t very wet it did keep me warm but I did layer it with a fleece underneath.  For the weather and temperature that afternoon it was fine but I do prefer my waterproof jackets a bit longer (to cover my bum at least) as this one in my option is a bit short.  Also the pockets are a little to shallow as I didn’t wear gloves and my hands were cold so spent most of the time with my hands in my pockets and they are not really deep enough for your hands and other paraphernalia us ladies like to cram into our pockets.  Otherwise a fantastic outer-shell for an autumn walk in the woods.  Watch out as I put the Resolve to the test Nordic Walking tomorrow…

Mel North Face Resolve Jacket Product Review for Go Outdoors....Mel North Face Resolve Jacket Product Review for Go Outdoors....Monday Lunchtime Nordic Walk, Diddington, St Neots

Weather: Started off drizzly, mild and windy, 15 degrees

Driving to the venue to start my Nordic Walk I had to put the windscreen wipers on my car, which only meant one thing for me – product testing the North Face Resolve Jacket.  The weather had definitely taken a turn from the stunning warm weekend so this with the perfect opportunity and the ideal weather for a jacket like this.  It wasn’t very cold but it was very windy and the jacket is a perfect wind-breaker.  This was the first time I had Nordic Walked with the jacket on despite it’s close fit still gave my full range of movement in my arms as they swing with the poles and although a little short in the body for me it was very comfortable and the ideal garment for this time of year and weather on the day.

One of my ladies on the Nordic Walk also had this jacket on (in white) and she bought the next size up to her usual size to take extra layers underneath for when it gets really cold and to get a slightly longer length, which is was, and she loves it too.  She went to Go Outdoors to purchase her one too!  It didn’t drizzle for long and in fact the sun came out and off went all of our jackets, fleeces and base-layers to finish the Nordic Walk in short-sleeves and smiles…

Weather: Damp, drizzly and a bit cold, 9 degrees

Perfect weather conditions for a jacket like this so I wasted no time, put it on, strapped in and off we went.  It was drizzly, damp and a bit cold to start but as soon as we got going it warmed up quite a lot and the jacket provides excellent waterproofing and wind proofing and full range of movement whilst striding out with the poles.  More and more of my group are interested in the jacket and one of my ladies was off to Go Outdoors after the session to buy one Smile .  My only gripe continues to be the length in the body (maybe the next size up would give me more length?) especially when it really rains but for now this jacket is the perfect compliment to our usually just drizzly weather for an outdoor activity like Nordic Walking or just out walking out with the dog in similar weather conditions to this.

IMG-20111108-00095IMG-20111108-00089_thumb1Tuesday Nature Reserve Nordic Walking and Induction Nordic Walking, Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, Little Paxton

Weather: Damp, raining and cold, 8 degrees

Today’s weather was a bit worse that yesterday’s so I put the jacket to the test again, especially as the rain was a bit heavier and more consistent.  I also layered with a Berghaus base layer (bought from  Go Outdoors that previous weekend) and it was the perfect combination for Nordic Walking – I was neither too hot or too cold – just right.  I was also pleased to see 2 other Nordic Walkers out with their Resolve North Face Jackets on too – both of which bought them at Go Outdoors previous to this walk and had great feedback from them too.  I wore this jacket for a good 3 hours of Nordic Walking as I was running two courses and it was absolutely perfect again for an outdoor activity like this.  You get great range of movement from the arms and upper body, it doesn’t make a rustling sound when you move your arms, it’s fitted look is flattering and comfortable to wear and my only negative this time are the positioning of the pockets in relation to my rucksack – they are little low as the lower straps on my rucksack cover the pockets making it a bit fiddly to get into the pockets, but this is something I have got used to with a lot of jackets out there on the market.

Lisa Spark’s Couch to 5K Testimonial…

IMG-20111026-00023Lisa WON the Couch to 5K improver prize and she 100% deserves it.  Lisa is a regular FitHavener and has worked really hard to get herself back to fitness after a bad back set-back last year (she attends Fitness Pilates and Zumba Toning) and really wanted to give the new jogging programme ago.  I advised that she try the first session and to see how she got on and well the rest is history – Lisa is now a very proud 5K runner – a TRUE INSPIRATION to anyone out there who thinks they cant do it – THEY CAN!  Here is her story…

I hadn’t run for years, so Fithaven’s 0 to 5k challenge seemed like it could be a great opportunity to give it another go, although having had quite a bad back problem last year I was quite nervous and wasn’t even sure I’d get through week 1 let alone make it to week 7!

However after a chat with Mel, I decided to give it a go. Being in a group of novices was really good as it felt like you were starting with people who were on your level and not having to struggle to keep up all the time. The course started with us doing more walking to running, with the time spent running increasing each week  until by week 7 we were running for nearly the whole session and hit our 5k target.

Our course instructor Marissa was there throughout the whole 7 weeks spurring us on and encouraging us to do that bit better each time.   It was so exhilarating when we reached that 7th week and hit our 5K targetIt was amazing to think we’d achieved so much in such a short space of time.  I was completely thrilled that I’d managed to get through the whole course.

Completing it gave me a huge sense of personal achievement. It was great to  discover running again, and even after just 7 weeks I could feel the  benefits. I really want to make sure I carry on now I’ve started again, and I’m hoping I’ll be able to build on what I’ve learned and carry on improving. I’ll never be a marathon runner, but if it helps keep me fitter and makes me feel good then it’s definitely worth it!

Couch to 5K Running Fitness, Superb Success! by Marisa…

FitHaven Couch to 5K Running Fitness with Marisa, Tuesday Nights, 6.30pm, Southoe & Buckden…

294115_10150439805220864_745705863_10437417_1107058139_nI can’t believe how quickly the seven weeks of running has flown by! The progress made by everyone has been phenomenal and I was so proud on Tuesday night to see everyone run their first 5km. It was fab to witness everyone go from running a total of 5 minutes in our first session back at the beginning of September and progressing to able to run a total of 31 mins on Tuesday after seven weeks. The dedication and commitment that everyone has put in has really made the group a success and the support for each other has certainly made the 5km more achievable over the 7 weeks.

I am really looking forward to continue building on the progress we have made so far and keep running through the winter when the nights can be cold and dark and off putting on your own!  Equally I am very excited about how "dashing" we’ll look in our 5km Santa Dash outfits on the December 11th! :)

Thank you to everyone who has taken part – Dionne, Zoe, Tess, Stefan, Lisa, Julie and Lynne – you have made my Tuesday nights!

FitHaven Couch to 5K Running Tips…

Stitches…

There are many theories about what causes a stitch and this include ab cramping as a result of a lack of oxygen or poor choice or timing of food and drink, irritation of the ligaments supporting the diaphragm and having an overly stiff thoracic (mid back) spine.  The most credible theory is that running creates friction between the inner and outer layers of the peritoneum, the tissue lining in the ab wall.

To prevent a stitch stick to eating small amounts of food rather than big meals before running and avoid foods high in sugar and fat.  Hydration also plays a HUGE part.  A study in the International Journal of Sport, Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that when exercises drank an isotonic flavoured water an isotonic sports drink, fruit juice or nothing at all – a stitch was more prevalent in those drinking fruit juice.

Do core stability exercises to strengthen the ab region (ULTIMATE CORE – 6.30pm – Buckden Millennium Centre) including the diaphragm and warm up thoroughly to allow lubrication of the peritoneum.  If you get a stitch bend forwards, stretch the area contract the abs or breathe deeply to ease the pain.  If all else fails, take heart in the fact that stitches seem to ease as we age.

Here’s another 10 reasons why your body’s going to love running…

To help keep you motivated to stick with your new running/jogging programme and to get out on the road we’ve pulled together the top ten health benefits of running.   Read this, then put your trainers on and go for it…

1) Lose weight - running is second only to cross-country skiing in burning calories per minute. Seeing as it’s unlikely you’ll be skiing to the shops anytime soon then running is your best bet for losing body fat. If you’re struggling to control your cravings then the good news is that running tends to lessen your appetite.

2) Can slow down the aging process - the natural process of muscle and bone loss as we age can be slowed down in the bodies of frequent runners. Muscles and bones get healthier and stronger due to the demands put on them by a regular pounding around a track or a park. This means you are more likely to delay or avoid the effects of osteoporosis. But don’t just take our word for it; read an interview at New Scientist with a man who is still running marathons in his 80s!

3) Better sex! - scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health showed that men who were physically active (such as runners) had 30% less chance of developing problems in the bedroom and that the increased blood flow around the body caused by regular exercise meant that both men and women experienced a more ‘potent love life’!

4)  Lower blood pressure - when you run your arteries get flexed more, in effect giving them a work out at the same time as you. By maintaining the flexibility of your arteries in this way you’ll also be making sure your blood pressure is lowered.

5) Healthier lungs - by taking deep breaths during your run you are forcing your lungs to use more of their potential, up to 50% of the lung tissue you don’t normally use! If you’re a smoker then one of the benefits of jogging can be recovering large proportions of your lung potential.

6) Boosts your brain - regular runners have significantly improved mental skills as they get older than more sedentary people. Also just 25 minutes of aerobic exercise has been shown to boost creativity.

7) Improves your mood - there’s no doubt about it, one of the main benefits of running is the great feeling you get by getting away from all the stresses and strains of everyday life. Be it running through woodlands, along the street or on a treadmill, when the endorphins start coursing through your system everything might just seem to be a bit more manageable.

8) Stronger cardiovascular system - your heart and lungs will get stronger and more efficient when they get a regular chance to show off their stuff.

9) Lower cholesterol - running increases the levels of High Density Lipoproteins (the “good” kind of cholesterol) in your body while reducing the Low Density Lipoproteins (the “bad” kind). This can lower your chances of having a stroke or heart attack.

10) Joining the community! - thousands of people around the country run everyday and you can join them. There are loads of clubs and communities you can get involved with and make new and enthusiastic friends who’ll support you in reaching your goals – and we have just started our one – so just watch it grow!!!!
